The spruce bark beetle continues destroying Swedish forests
Damaged
volumes are expected to level out, although damage will still be more
extensive than normal also in 2010. In its third and last report this
year to the Swedish Government about damage caused by this insect the
Swedish Forest Agency forecasts aggregate damage in 2010 to be between
50.000 and 100.000 cubic metres. As usual development will to a large
extent depend on the weather. The reasons why only 220.000 cubic metres
suffered damage, as opposed to the expected 300.000 cubic metres, were
favourable weather conditions, effective information and good forest
protection work. Two serious storms a few years ago are the reasons for
the extensive bark beetle damage.
