New unit to test timber
A DIGITAL control computer for the automatic stress grading of
timber has been developed by Plessey Automation in Australia in
conjunction with the Forestry Commission of NSW. The
computer device has been incorporated in timber stress grading
equipment known as the Computermatic Timber Grading machine made by
Isles Forge and Engineering Pty Ltd, of Coffs Harbour, NSW, which has
ordered 20 of the computer units from Plessey Automation. This revolutionary development in stress grading equipment
eliminates guesswork in the choice of timber for building and other
construction purposes. It enables smaller dimensions of timber — as well as smaller quantities — to be used, thus cutting building costs. Speeding test results A NEW British device has been developed by Elliott Automation for
the automatic preparation of recorded scientific test information for
feeding to a computer. The device is considerably less expensive and trials have shown it
to be more accurate than any comparable equipment produced in the US.
