The forest-based sector is expected to become the lead market in Europe
This is a realistic prospect because the forest-based sector uses
renewable raw materials, operates on a sustainable basis and it has
growth potential.
Forest industries in co-operation with forest owners have created a
common vision up to the year 2030. According to the vision the
forest-based sector in Europe will play a central role in a society
based on sustainable use of natural resources. FTP is now looking for
means how to improve attitudes in Europe concerning research and
innovation in order to make this vision come true. Co-operation in the
forest-based sector has already given results in so far as the European
Union's 7th Research Framework Programme, FP7, offers good financing
opportunities for the sector.
The conference also examined the core themes of this Programme for the
future and what financing opportunities it may offer to the
forest-based sector. The conference estimated that forestry, wood
supply and better understanding of forest ecosystems would constitute
important elements in respect of financing opportunities under the
auspices of the Framework Programme.
