China's Private Forestry Enterprises Booming. Statistics show that the average annual growth of China's forest products industry has topped 26% over 5 years....
With the rapid development of the economy and with expanding consumer demand,
China's forest products industry is also enjoying rapid development. Statistics
show that the average annual growth of China's forest products industry has
topped 26% over 5 years, higher than the average growth of Gross Domestic
Product over the same period.
Currently China's wood-based panel production is around 21 million cubic metres,
ranking second in the world. MDF production (5.3 million cubic metres in 2001 )
ranks first in the world. China's paper and paperboard production amounted to 32
million tons in 2001, which was second only to production in th USA. The
furniture industry has kept up a high annula growth rate of 15% in recent years
and output valued yuan 140 billion in 2001 while exports came to US$4 billion.
Many large scale private enterprises have emerged and these have become an
important driving force for the forest products industry. Experience has shown
that the private sector will continue to develop because of a strong competitive
advantage and will become the dominant driving force in the forest products
sector.
According to estimates of total investment in the forest products industry over
5 years, 87% has been by the private sector. Companies such as Shanghai
Xin'gaochao (Group) Co. Ltd is a private enterprise featuring mainly timber
processing units. Total assets are estimated to amounts to more than yuan 3.8
billion and annual sales top yuan 6 billion. The annual consumption of timber is
said to be over 3 million cubic metres. The company's products are sold in
Europe, America and Japan.
Another wood products giant is the International Jixiang Artificial Wood
Products Group which produces 340,000 cubic metres of MDF and 10 million square
metres of impregnated paper laminated flooring annually. Its annual sales are
over yuan 620 million.
Currently there are some 20 000 of forest products industry enterprises in
Zhejiang Province, of which more than 98% are private enterprises. The Total
forestry output value of Zhejiang Province topped yuan 70 billion in 2002, of
which more than 90% came from non-public enterprises.
