German softwood sawn timber exports to the US doubled within 6 months in 2004
German statistics department estimated that the country increased softwood sawn timber exports 20% to 2.36 million cub m within 6 months in 2004. Softwood sawn timber imports increased 4% to 2.03 million cub m within 6 months in 2004 compared with the prior period in 2003.
Softwood sawn timber exports almost doubled due to the exports of sawn timber to the US, accounting for 28% (655.718 cub m) of the total German sawn timber exports (17% in 2003). As a result average purchase prices in the US declined from EUR 177 per cub m in 2003 to EUR 163 per cub m in 2004. Other major German sawn timber importers were France (387.252 cub m) and Italy (368.584 cub m).
German sawn timber imports increased due to the increase in supplies from Russia and Sweden, while Byelorussia, Poland and the Czech Republic declined the supplies.
