Russian foreign trade 2003
According to a U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service GAIN report, total exports of Russian forest products in 2003 will reach $3.3 billion (up 15% from 2002). But there is in Russia also a demand for imported forest products, which will increase by over 35% to reach $242 million in 2003. The increase in the total value of exports of forest products can be attributed to higher exports to the E.U. because of the appreciation of the Euro. Exports to Finland and Japan will rise. In the study a strong demand for Russia?s forest products by China were expected. Finland, Japan and China account for over 50% of all Russian exports of forest products, mostly softwood logs and softwood lumber.
Russia?s share of the world market for all wood products is estimated at 2% to 4%, while its market share of minimally processed forest products is around 22%. About 52% of all Russia's forest product exports last year were rough wood, 7% above the previous year.
