Special Swedish yeast can provide viable ethanol from wood
Swedish ethanol manufacturer Sekab and Swedish research company Taurus Energy have been testing ethanol production from cellulose-based feedstock on an industrial scale demo. The results are reported to be promising.
A special type of yeast gives a more efficient fermentation of the sugars derived from cellulose. The results of the test runs suggest that it would be profitable to produce ethanol from cellulose-based raw materials from agriculture and forestry.
Today, ethanol is mainly produced by growing sugar cane and cornon agricultural land. It is hoped that ethanol from forest wast could reduce the conflict between energy and food production.
