Ukraine: government programm of increase of forest areas

Ukrainian government is planning a reforestation project for the period 2002-2005. They aim to increase the forest areas of 0.5 million hectare (from the current 15.6% to 16.1% of the whole territory). "That's the least goal, due to the lack of available funds" said N. Kolesnitschenko, President of the Governmental Committee of Forestry Economy. "The best purpose — he suggests — is a growth of 2 millions hectares". The main points of the governmental plan are: the increase of forest areas, the improvement of forest output and of the plantations quality, and the protection of the biodiversity. Then, the government must get better control over forests protection, in order to assure their correct exploitation and preservation.
